Main Street Tucker Alliance Cancels 2011 Tucker Day Celebration-- Plans Currently Underway for Fall Festivities Around Main Street Ribbon-Cutting 08/12/2011

MARCH 2011 (TUCKER GA) The Main Street Tucker Alliance, the host organizer of Tucker Day, announced today the cancellation of the 2011 Tucker Day celebration. This year, the Main Street Streetscape project will still be underway in May, making Main Street inaccessible for such a large, all-day event. Instead, in the fall, the MTA plans a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a celebration of Tucker's newly redesigned Main Street business district.

"The entire Tucker community looks forward every year to Tucker Day as a premier family event," said Honey Van De Kreke, co-general manager of the Main Street Tucker Alliance. "We are saddened to call it off this year, but the fall celebration of the new Main Street will hopefully be a festive reminder of the renewed importance of our downtown area."

First held in 1956, Tucker Day is an annual event, scheduled the second Saturday of May, where Tucker celebrates the history of the town. A large parade kicks off the event, followed by a day of music, food, arts and crafts. Both local and regional vendors come to display their wares; a variety of food vendors temp any appetite with a wide selection of culinary delights.  Live music is played all day and a special area is set aside for kids' activities such as games and pony rides.

In December 2010, construction began on the Main Street Streetscape project, a complete renovation and redesign of Main Street. Scheduled to take 300 days to completion, the project will still be underway in May when Tucker Day is normally scheduled. Rather than move the location of Tucker Day, the MTA decided to cancel this year's event and instead hold a major celebration in the fall commemorating the completion of the Streetscape project. Details of the fall celebration, including the date, will be released later this spring.

"There is much to celebrate in Tucker this year," said Van De Kreke. "The groundbreaking in the fall is not only to celebrate a newly restored Main Street but the start of an exciting new future for our community."
